Who is it for?

Whether you’re a complete beginner or a false beginner who’s not yet gotten to grips with basic Finnish, our course is designed to activate you and get you speaking.

The online lessons are focused on making learning Finnish fun, rewarding and instructive. Your teacher will encourage you by presenting real-life, spoken Finnish, and leading you in organized practice. 

How do I take part?

There are 9 lessons, held online two to three times a week, for four weeks. The lessons are 120 minutes long, and are held in the early evening. That’s a total of 18 hours of practice and teaching. And the lessons are held on Microsoft Teams, so you will need to have your camera and a microphone on!

    The minimum group size is 5, and the maximum number of students in any group is 9. So, you will have plenty of opportunity for 1-1- teacher time during the lessons, as well as lots of practice with your fellow students. 

    What will I learn?

    During the classroom lessons, the trainer will focus on activities designed to teach you basic phrases and useful vocabulary for daily life in Finland. From being able to say “Moi moi”, to “Paljonko kello on?”, you will learn and practice with your teacher and your classmates, making sure that as much of the class time as possible is used to activate your Finnish skills!

    You will receive instruction, feedback, support, and encouragement from your trainer. With over 40 years of experience in language training in Finland, we promise that your course will be well-planned, suitable for your level, and at a pace that is right for you as a beginner. 

    What about study material?

    That’s the great part – you get access to 10 hours of our digital self-study material, Suomen Kielen Perusteet, for you to use outside of the lessons. This interactive, engaging, and pedagogically designed digital material covers 10 one-hour topics that are essential topics for beginners.

    Access is the material is via our Learning Management System (LMS), 360Learning. You can study the material anytime, anywhere you have an internet connection. You will have access to the material for 90 days from the date of your purchase. 


    The topics in the digital material are:

    1. Aakkoset (The alphabet)
    2. Kuukaudet ja viikonpäivät (Times of the day and days of the week)
    3. Vuorokaudenajat (Weekdays and months)
    4. Numerot ja järjestysluvut (Numbers and ordinals)
    5. Kuka sinä olet (Who are you?)
    6. Minkämaalainen sinä olet? (Describing yourself)
    7. Minun perhe (My family)
    8. Verbityyppi 1 (Verb type 1)
    9. Millainen sää tänään on? (What is the weather like today?)
    10. Vuodenajat (Seasons and times of the year)

     

    The material includes listening and pronunciation practice, a clearly presented set of vocabulary and/or grammar around a specific topic, practice and revision exercises and a downloadable PDF of the key vocabulary from the course. 

    What happens if I order this course?

    Register now for the course by adding it to the cart and completing your purchase in the checkout. You will then receive the following emails:

    • A receipt from the Acolad Learning Store. Keep this for your records.

    • An email from our booking system (booking@acolad.com) that contains a link to our Learning Management System (LMS), 360Learning, plus your password.
      • 360Learning is where you access the program, Finnish for Beginners - Digital Self-Study, which contains 10 hours of Suomen kielen perusteet digital self-study material. Plus, you can use the message wall there to keep in touch with your classmates, share what you know, or motivate and challenge each other in learning Finnish!
    • A confirmation from Acolad Learning (no-reply@360learning.com) that you have been added to the program, Finnish for Beginners - Digital Self-Study

    • As soon as the course has been confirmed, you will receive an email from your trainer, Marie Habartová (mhabartova@acolad.com) that contains calendar invitations to the online lessons. Add them your calendar and you’ll never have an excuse for missing a lesson! 

    • Remember to check your spam/junk email folders in case any of the emails are hiding there.

      What happens if not enough people sign up?

      You will be contacted by our customer service team, who will offer you a full refund or the choice to join the next open course available. 

      Who is the trainer?

      Maria Habartová is a highly-experienced trainer who herself has achieved a native-level of Finnish, and who regularly teaches Finnish as a foreign language to non-Finnish employees here in Finland. She brings insight and skill to the challenges all beginners face when trying to learn to speak Finnish at a practical level.
